Rhiannon Floyd originally signed up for Muddy Paws simply to play with the pets, but the 40-year-old discovered a dream she didn’t know she had and unlocked many more doors for herself than the one to her prison cell. Floyd graduated Monday evening in a class of 35 women from Muddy Paws, a re-entry program for women with criminal backgrounds put on by the non-profit Pets Helping People. In a tearful speech, Floyd addressed a packed gymnasium at Southern Hills Baptist Church near 61st and Lewis Avenue. Serving 10 years for possession of methamphetamine, Floyd said she has co-occuring diagnoses of bi-polar and epilepsy. Statistics give her less than a 2 percent chance at success in life when coupled with her substance abuse history. She didn’t initially believe she had a shot. “Now I know I can. And I am,” Floyd said. View the full story here.
